| My name is David. I go by the handle DiscusDave on several internet Forums. I have been involved in the aquarium hobby for over 30 years. During that time I have kept almost every type of Aquarium there is: freshwater community, freshwater predatory, African cichlids, salt water only, reef, planted, and of course, Discus. I have written a couple articles that have been published in aquarium magazines. I would describe myself as an advanced hobbyist. I have had fish spawn and raise young before, but it was not resulting from a deliberate effort on my part. My interest in Discus started in the late 1980's, when the giants of the hobby were names like Wattley, Degen, and Schmidt-Focke. Back then, besides wild types, the only Discus strains available to me were Blue Cobalts and Red Turquoise. The first couple years I was on the learning curve and inadvertently killed a few Discus out of ignorance of proper care, as there was not a lot of information. But I learned and even had some pair formations and spawnings in the very early 1990's. Things sure have changed in Discus keeping from those times. There has been a veritable explosion of different strains, particularly coming out of Asia. Discus are just easier to keep today than in the early years. There is a wealth of information on their nutritional needs, water requirements, health issues, and breeding habits. Discus today seem to spawn easier and are easier to keep healthy than when I first started with them. The introduction of the hardy Pigeon Blood Discus gene into many strains seems to have facilitated the ease of keeping Discus, in addition to the large knowledge base of information available to everyone nowadays. DiscusDave.com has grown out of my hobby. I aim to import and sell fish from Asia and Europe with the goal of providing the newer, exotic strains available out of Asia and the older, established lines available from Europe. I am currently associated with Inda Discus Farm of Penang, malaysia, and Stendker Discus from Germany. Stendker Discus are very healthy, and near adult sizes (5 inch) are available at reasonable costs. In fact, some of my customer's have had pair formation and spawnings within three weeks of purchase. I hope to be able to serve the Discus Community's needs with beautiful, healthy, vibrant fish. Best regards DiscusDave |
